Dili in February

A quiet weekend is to be attempted this weekend. There has been a few issues building up in Dili and we have been advised to restrict ourselves to non-essential travel. My position that farewelling dear Brad Bowman at the One More Bar was essential was not received well. Its a good day to go through my inbox.
During the week, the big news for us, was that an Aussie soldier shot someone dead. Say what you will, the place is not very secure, it was somewhat expected.
The news of the week for Timorese was that the shops ran out of rice. This seemed a bit of a flash point, leading to warehouse looting and general malcontent. My feeling is that a rice shortage was probably not a sudden thing. Could this not have been foreseen and, dare I say it, planned for? Never mind, moving forward there is relief expected in March. Ahem.
It has also been looking wet around Dili. The rains have been very late, but have occurred daily of late. IDP camps are very wet in some cases. The idea that this would move them out is not developing, in fact security problems have meant that they are filling again or new ones are being formed. Its difficult to know where to focus resources.
Don't worry, UNMIT has committed to another 12 months.
